Bachata Dance

Bachata Dance form is another Latin dance form which is originated from the Dominican Republic. Bachata dance is a social form of dance that is now performed all over the world on certain bachata rhythms. Bachata is considered to be one of the most dynamic, energetic, and exciting dance forms like Salsa.

Bachata is performed in a full 8-count moving with a square, consisting of 3-steps and then a tap on the 4th beat along with Cuban hip motion or various forms of step syncopations. Bachata can be performed on any beat of a musical theme as long as the basic beat is maintained. To be very honest, the hip moments the paving steps of this dance form.

Origin of Bachata Dance

The Bachata dance was originated created in the Dominican Republic during the 1960s and was danced only in close positions like Bolero on slow music. Started as a social dance form in the Caribbean, Bachata has evolved a lot. It is now performed across the world with the same energy and excitement. Though it has gained pace and has added a lot of footwork which makes it more enthusiastic to watch and perform.

Bachata is performed in duets that express one’s emotion for the other. Bachata is performed on soft hip movements and a tap romantically to express his/her feelings for the other.

Types of Bachata Dance

Like any other popular dance form, Bachata has evolved a lot through time. The evolution has resulted in many different forms of Bachata Dance:

  • Traditional Bachata Dance: During the 1990s, many western dance classes started side-to-side patterns instead of the box styles that concluded with a tap after changing direction.
  • Bachatango: Shortly after the Traditional Dance form, bachata evolved into Bachatango that includes short steps and more tango movements.
  • Modern/Moderna: Moderna was developed during the year 2005. The basic steps and style of this dance form are the same as that of Traditional Dance but inherited few steps from Salsa, tango, and ballroom.
  • Sensual: The Sensual dance form was created in Spain, Andalusia, and Cadiz by Korke and Judith Cordero. They created their own form of Bachata which included footprints of Contemporary and Brazilian Zouk.
  • Ballroom Style: The ballroom dance form has also been developed in the west that was primarily created for dance competitions rather than social dancing.
